Mission and Purpose

In New Orleans, the Constable is the chief law enforcement officer for First City Court, which has jurisdiction over the entire eastbank of Orleans Parish. First City Court of New Orleans has one of the largest jurisdictions in the U.S.

First City Court’s jurisdiction includes civil lawsuits with claims up to $20,000, small claims suits up to $3,000 and evictions for residential and commercial properties with rental fees up to $3,000 per month.

In the Constable’s Office, our mission is simple. Once the court renders a judgment on a case, we are responsible for making sure the court’s orders are carried out.

Under order of the First City Court of New Orleans, the Constable’s office serves pleadings, makes seizures, conducts evictions, and conducts sales of property. Unlike other government offices, the Constable’s Office is unique in that we perform our jobs at no cost to the taxpayer. We are financially self-sufficient because our annual budget, including all salaries, is taken from funds we collect for services rendered.

The Office of the Constable has a proud tradition of service and responsibility that goes far beyond serving papers and making seizures.

The Constable’s Office employs more than 30 individuals. To accommodate our growth, we have expanded to two offices downtown and a third office in the Lake Forest Plaza in New Orleans East. The Constable’s Office has developed partnerships with local non-profit and philanthropic organizations and created community assistance programs for the elderly and indigent. Our staff actively participates in role model and community outreach programs at educational institutions across the city. In short, we are expanding the traditional scope of the Constable’s Office and making a difference wherever we can.
